For reporting and accounting reasons Bloom needs to categorize your customers and orders. We call these categories Sales Types. When an order is created in Shopify, the customer's sales type is added as a meta field to the order. For example: If your customer Jim Smith is the wine buyer for a restaurant, his customer sales type would be Wholesale. When you manually create an order in Shopify for Jim Smith, the order will be marked as a Wholesale order.


Here are some important rules to understand:

  • All club orders (batches), member orders (create order), web store orders, and POS orders will be marked as Retail, regardless of the customer's sales type. So, the vast majorty of customers don't need a sales type.
  • Orders created in Shopify manaully, using the Draft Order feature will use the customer's sales type on the order. These are typically Wholesale, Distributor, and Dontations.
  • Distributors should have a license ID for reporting purposes. 
  • Make sure all non-sales orders (samples, product given away, etc.) uses a customer with the propler sales type.


Update a customer's sales type

 1. Go to a customer detail view
In Shopify, click on Customers, then pick the customer you want to update to from the list. When the customer detail view loads use the More actions drop-down and select Edit customer's sales type.

2. Customer's sales type view
The customer's sales type view will load. For each customer, you can select a Sales Type. For distributors, you can add their license ID. Then click Save.

3. Return to the customer detail view
After you have successfully saved the customer meta fields, you can use the back navigation to get back to the original customer iew.

Now, whenever an order is saved, we can use this data to mark the order with the correct sales type. Awesome!


Important notes for Samples and product given away:
The best way to handle samples or non-sales that are given away, is to create an order. Say the winery owner takes a case of wine from inventory. Make sure you create an order using the owner's customer. The owner's customer should be marked as a Winery owner or partner sales type. All samples should also use a customer. Name this customer 'Samples In-winery'. If you're giving samples outside the winery, create a new customer called 'Samples Out-of-winery'. Give these customers the proper sales type. All samples should have orders with 100% discounts.
